CANACONA: Palolem, having a well-known and world acclaimed famous beach is virtually crowded with foreign as well as domestic tourists.
The beach coast at Palolem is virtually over-crowded with vehicles over-flowing, particularly on weekends and and week days having 2-3 days holidays.
However, the problem is these domestic tourists coming once enters the beach coast village finds difficult and next to impossible to find a parking space and are virtually left to scurry around looking for the parking spot.
The only parking lot which is set –up in the approximately 4000sqm of land which Canacona municipality has acquired two decades ago (1988) , has only a miniscule space for vehicle parking after part of this lnad is used for Toilet block (alongwith baths, changing rooms, etc) operated by Sulabh Soucholoya can hardly accommodate over two dozens of Vehicles.
The available space amidst the cocunot trees, and Life-guard Tower and Toilet block, the actual place left for parking virtually in a disarray forcing every other vehicle to move out of the beach coast area.
On weekends and long holidays, the flow of domestic tourists from different parts of the country comes to Palolem with their owned vehicles and since the small Parking-Lot has no space to park their vehicles, most vehicles comes out of Palolem and heads to other beaches either in Canacona or elsewhere.
The few domestic tourists who already had pre-booking of rooms and have no choice are forced to park their vehicles 2-3 kms away outside the village.
It may be recalled that the world famous Palolem beach either on Main beach entrance or Ourem is so much saturated with tourism activities have little or no open space for parking and even do not have sufficient space to widen both the existing narrow streets.
While every council raising the grit for a decent parking lot and widening of narrow palolem streets, the than Dy. Speaker/Ex-Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes has even raised the issued in the Assembly, while the previous council (CMC) has also passed resolutions for a parking lot at Palolem
Multi-storey parking lot.
Soon after taking over, CMC Chairperson Ramakant Naigaunkar has informed that setting up a Multi-Storeyed Parking Lot at Palolem is the need of the hour, and besides widening of narrow streets getting the multi-storey parking will be one of the top priority in this council.
