“As a result of monsoon season, holding of panchayat elections are not possible. Govt has decided to appoint an administrator to look after functioning of panchayats,” said CM Sawant
He further said that the OBC commission should start and take triple test as specified by Supreme Court of India and to submit report to the State Election Commission (SEC).
The file seeking time to hold elections to panchayats, has been sent to the State Election Commission (SEC) and it is for the commission to take the final decision,” Dr Pramod Sawant said
He had also said that the government does not want to go ahead with the elections without reservations to OBCs. “File with the recommendation is sent to the SEC. Now it is for them to decide,” Sawant said.
Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho said that the government has to follow the Supreme Court order in letter and spirit.
“All States are following it and we have to follow it,” he said, adding that the government has acted instantly on the triple test and the Goa State Commission for Backward Classes has been entrusted with this task.
Godinho said that the government’s priority is to hold panchayat elections as early as possible but the Supreme Court judgment has come in the way and the government has to follow it. The government is not shying away from elections when it is not contested on party lines, he said.
