New Delhi: PM Modi chaired an important meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg to review India’s preparedness amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia and its possible impact on the country’s economy and supply systems.
The meeting focused on evaluating steps taken by various ministries and departments to safeguard India’s energy security, maintain stable supply chains and ensure macro economic stability. It was the second high level review meeting convened to assess the evolving geopolitical situation.
During the discussion, officials briefed the committee on measures implemented to ensure adequate availability of petroleum products such as LPG and LNG. The government has begun diversifying sources of supply and strengthening procurement from multiple countries to reduce the risk of disruptions.
Authorities also reported that domestic LPG prices have remained unchanged and enforcement drives are being carried out to prevent hoarding and black marketing. Efforts are underway to expand the network of Piped Natural Gas connections across the country.
To maintain uninterrupted electricity supply during the summer months, additional coal supplies are being directed to thermal power plants. Certain gas based power plants have also been temporarily exempted from pooling mechanisms to ensure steady generation.
The meeting reviewed preparedness in the agriculture sector as well. Steps are being taken to maintain sufficient fertiliser supplies, including increasing production of urea and coordinating with international partners for the import of DAP and NPK fertilisers ahead of the upcoming cropping seasons.
State governments have been asked to intensify monitoring and take strict action against hoarding or diversion of fertilisers. Officials also noted that retail prices of essential food items have remained stable in recent weeks, while control rooms have been established to monitor prices and coordinate with states under the Essential Commodities Act.
The committee also assessed possible challenges in sectors such as aviation, shipping and logistics, particularly regarding safe passage through strategic routes like the Strait of Hormuz.
The Prime Minister directed all departments to remain vigilant and ensure the uninterrupted availability of essential goods while emphasising the importance of clear communication to prevent misinformation and public anxiety.
