New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s new proposal to end the Gaza conflict, describing it as a “viable pathway” to lasting peace and stability in West Asia. In a post on X, PM Modi said, “We welcome President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It provides a viable pathway to long-term and sustainable peace, security, and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people, as also for the larger West Asian region.” He added that he hoped “all concerned will come together behind President Trump’s initiative and support this effort to end conflict and secure peace.”
The 20-point proposal, agreed upon by Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after talks at the White House on Monday, calls for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas within 72 hours. Israel, in return, would free 250 Palestinians serving life sentences and 1,700 detainees held since the war began, including women and children. It would also hand over the bodies of 15 Palestinians for each hostage’s remains.
The plan outlines a phased Israeli troop withdrawal, to take place only after Hamas disarms and an international security force is deployed to maintain order. Israel would retain a “security perimeter presence,” a term that could effectively mean a buffer zone inside Gaza. Hamas’ military infrastructure, including its tunnel network, would be dismantled. Members pledging to live peacefully would be granted amnesty, while those unwilling to do so would be allowed to leave Gaza. Hamas would also be barred from governing the territory.
Under the plan, a multinational security force would oversee Hamas’ disarmament, keep order, and train Palestinian police to eventually take over law enforcement duties. Egypt has confirmed that it is already training thousands of Palestinian officers for deployment. Large-scale humanitarian aid would be allowed into Gaza under the management of neutral international agencies such as the UN and the Red Crescent, with guarantees that Palestinians would not be forcibly displaced. The plan also commits to a major international effort to rebuild Gaza and restore normalcy.
While the proposal has been welcomed by Israel, Hamas has previously demanded a clear declaration of a complete end to the war and full Israeli withdrawal before releasing all hostages, raising questions about whether the plan will satisfy both sides and lead to a lasting ceasefire.
