MARGAO: A portion of the Sonsodo waste treatment plant wall collapsed all of a sudden on Saturday morning.
Officials said that the plant had waste piled up of around 4000 to 6000 tons, and the wall may have collapsed due to the weight.
Locals feel that there is a lack of willingness among the elected representatives to clear this long-pending issue of Sonsodo waste despite the availability of advanced technology.
Mahesh Amonkar, councillor of Mormugao municipal council, said that the collapse of the portion of the waste treatment plant wall at Sonsodo waste dumping site was bound to happen because the municipal engineer was not giving any attention to the piling waste issue at Sonsoddo.
“The chief officer of MMC and the Margao MLA is also responsible for this, in my opinion, who have neglected the Sonsodo issue and has not done anything to sort out the issue in time,” he said.
He added, “The foul smell of this waste is reaching far away places, and during monsoon, we won’t be surprised if something else collapses at Sonsodo. Chairperson of MMC Lyndon is also responsible for this since he has done nothing to solve this problem.”
Repeated efforts were made to contact the Chief Officer of Margao municipal council, but he didn’t respond to the call of the Goemkarponn reporter.
Shailesh Naik, a businessman from Margao, said it seems like the Sonsoddo is a Good mine, and everyone is talking about it, but nobody can treat that piled up waste and clear it.
Naik further added that the government can vow to clear potholes from the state within a month’s time, but it is surprising that they cannot solve the Sonsodo piled up garbage issue when there is advanced technology available in the present time.
“I feel there is a lack of willingness to clear the Sonsodo waste issue”, he stated.
Another person Nissar said that it is a real shame that still shame that the authorities are unable to clear the piled up legacy waste at Sonsodo.
He said, “the foul odour is unbearable. Two years ago, there was a fire breakdown at Sonsodo, and still, the legacy waste is not cleared. Clearing Sonsodo should be the prime priority of the Margao municipality”.
