Chandigarh: The political confrontation over Punjab’s drug crisis intensified as Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed an anti drug rally in Jalandhar as part of the BJP’s statewide “Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra”.
The rally has become a major political platform for the BJP as it seeks to make the drug problem a central issue ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The party has accused the state government of failing to control the spread of drugs and has promised stronger action if it comes to power.
The Aam Aadmi Party, however, has questioned the Centre’s role in tackling drug trafficking and demanded answers from the Union Home Minister.
AAP leader Neel Garg raised questions about the responsibilities of central agencies involved in combating drug trafficking. He questioned the role of the Border Security Force and the Narcotics Control Bureau and asked what measures had been taken to disrupt interstate drug networks.
Garg also questioned the effectiveness of efforts to prevent the movement of drugs through borders and other entry points into the country. He argued that tackling drug trafficking requires coordination between the state and central governments.
“Punjab does not need speeches, it needs answers,” Garg said, calling for concrete results and a clear strategy to dismantle the drug supply chain.
The BJP has maintained that it is prepared to take stronger measures against the drug trade in Punjab. BJP state president Kewal Singh Dhillon said the party had experience in dealing with major law and order challenges in other states and would apply a similar approach to Punjab.
The BJP has also promised that, if elected to power, it would work to eliminate the state’s drug problem within two years.
The Jalandhar rally marks a significant escalation in the BJP’s campaign on the issue, while the AAP’s response has shifted the focus towards the respective responsibilities of the state and central governments in tackling drug trafficking.
