VELSAO: The South Western Railways began finishing work on the Velsao railway crossing road, aiming to address issues caused by recent construction.
The works began In response to local complaints and intervention by social worker Roquezinho D’Souza,
According to D’Souza, the initial road work was left uneven and bumpy, resulting in difficulties for locals, particularly traditional fishermen and senior citizens. “The road now has slippery pebbles and lacks a smooth, level surface,” he stated, explaining that the situation caused several accidents and incidents of people losing balance. Many local fishermen also complained that their fish baskets often fell due to the road’s condition.
D’Souza brought these concerns to the attention of Cortalim MLA Anton Vas and Sanvordem-based Railway Officer Meeraj Gaffar, highlighting the challenges posed by the unfinished work. He mentioned that some minor accidents had already been reported at the crossing, and residents urged immediate action.
“The railways removed the tiles on the road during their work but didn’t reinstall them afterward,” D’Souza said. “This oversight made it tough for pedestrians, especially the elderly and disabled people on two-wheelers.”
After inspecting the site, railway authorities assured residents that finishing work would be completed without further delay. “The railways were very understanding and have already deputed an officer to oversee the work,” D’Souza confirmed. “We hope this will soon bring relief to the locals and prevent further inconvenience.”
