New Delhi: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday inspected the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project in Surat, Gujarat, describing the work progress as “really good” and confirming that the first operational section from Surat to Bilimora will be ready by 2027.
Speaking to reporters at Saroli, Vaishnaw said, “The first section of the Bullet Train project that will become operational is Surat to Bilimora. I inspected the work of the station and track laying; this is really good progress.” He emphasized that several “unique” technologies have been incorporated into the project, which could benefit other infrastructure projects across the country.
“Several new technologies have been introduced into the work on tracks. These are unique to the bullet train project and will provide valuable experience for other projects in the country,” he added.
Vaishnaw also highlighted the features of Surat station, which will serve as a stop for all trains along the corridor. The station will have two tracks on each side and two central tracks, along with two platforms—one for trains heading towards Mumbai and another for Ahmedabad. A large concourse in the centre will accommodate passenger movement efficiently.
The bullet trains are designed to operate at speeds of 320-340 km/h, marking a major milestone in India’s transport infrastructure. Vaishnaw noted the specialized design of high-speed rail turnouts, ensuring seamless connectivity between tracks even at these high speeds.
“The first section from Surat to Bilimora will become operational in 2027. High-speed rail turnouts are very specially designed because when trains run at 320-340 km/h and tracks are connecting, there should be no gap. I saw several new things during the inspection,” he said.
The 508 km-long Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is India’s first bullet train project and is expected to set new benchmarks in high-speed rail technology and passenger convenience.
