PANAJI: On a positive note, Goa has reported 30598 cases in last 10 days from May 1 to May 10, but more importantly, we have 20720 patients, who have successfully defeated the virus.
Yes, while the rising infections is a cause of worry, the silver lining is that the State’s recovery rate is improving with every passing day and has now reached 67 p.c.
But yet, the loss of lives remains the biggest worry for Goans and the government.
In the last 10 days there have been 561 deaths which means 56 people lose their lives every given day.
Despite the government claiming of increasing the oxygenated beds, the statistics do not show any improvement as far as deaths are concerned.
Loss of lives due to shortage of Oxygen remains the main cause of deaths.
Says Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte “561 Covid Deaths in 10 days! #GoaGovt’s Apathy has brought us into this ghastly situation. Goans continue Waiting for #Vaccination, Lying in hospital corridors, Begging for Breath of Life & finally queuing up for cremation!”
While recoveries are steadily increasing, the positivity rate continues to be high at over 51 p.c.
In the last 10 days, the mortality rate has increased to 1.8 p.c.
“The rate at which positive cases have increased represents the true picture of how fast the virus has spread,” said one state official, adding that a complete lockdown and strict ban on entry of all tourists was the only way to slow down the surge.
Nationwide, India has recorded over 20 million infections since the start of the epidemic, the second-highest in the world after the United States, and over 225,000 deaths.
Runa Aggarwal, a volunteer at Covid Care Goa, a citizen initiative, said the group was requesting people who have recovered from COVID-19 to volunteer in government hospitals.
“Given that so many of the hospital staff are stretched and there is just not enough bandwidth to attend to all the patients…at least volunteers can help with walking with them to the restroom, make them eat,” said Aggarwal.
