A closer look at the shows that 85 per cent of migrants are involved in the crimes in Goa.
However, migration happens when the demand for manpower increases in any region and Goa is one such place where migration is rampant due to the development of the State’s infrastructure.
Goans are leaving Goa with the help of Portuguese Passport in search of better opportunities, and that creates the gap between skilled and unskilled manpower, which is filled by the people coming from the neighbouring states. Besides this, many non-Goans have invested in big businesses that have been set up in Goa.
Another major factor is Goans themselves have to be blamed for this; many Goans rent out their premises to migrants without police verification, which has led to crimes.
In the last few months, there seems to be a spurt in the number of crimes in the State, like thefts, robberies, rapes, murders and so on.
Of Course, the Goa Police claims to have detected almost 80-90 per cent of the crimes, but still, that does not discourage the culprits from committing the crimes.
Unemployment is also one of the main reasons for the increasing crime in Goa. Due to the jobless rate, people tend to commit crimes to earn to make ends meet. Inequality and violent crime also cause crimes.
Also, Goa is one of the most sought-after tourism destinations in the world and has always had very high expectations from tourists from all over the world the highest expectation is safety, but several cases in the past have turned this image into a negative one.
Goa is blessed with an abundance of serenity and resources. This place’s cultural mix and vibes have fascinated people around the globe. While millions of tourists flock here every year, the tourism industry has bloomed into one of the most revenue-producing sectors.
This has led to an influx of migrants in the State.

The Chief Minister of Goa, Dr Pramod Sawant, has also acknowledged that migrants are involved in 85 per cent of the crimes like rape and murders reported in Goa.
“As per the records available, approximately 80-85 per cent of cases such as murder and rape take place because of migrants,” Sawant said in the state assembly while congratulating the state police department for cracking cases.
“In every part of Goa, migrants come and stay, and many locals rent premises without any verification. I urge people to cooperate in the tenant verification drive undertaken by the police department,” he said.
But why do migrants get involved in crimes which go unnoticed?
The day and night claims of patrolling by Goa Police have also not shown any positive results as it is done only for formality.
For example, the illicit trade of drugs and prostitution happens right under the nose of police in coastal areas, but the police seem to be unaware. Why?
While the Goa police have been successful in detecting the crime, its iNtelligence unit has been a failure. The Special Branch and the CID need to be reprimanded for failing to zero in on criminals in sensitive areas like Moti Dongor, Chimbel, Vasco etc.
