Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir government has significantly revised its compensation policy under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme, increasing financial assistance for families of security personnel killed in action and civilians affected by terrorism and cross border shelling.
Under the new notification, the families of defence personnel and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel who are domiciled in Jammu and Kashmir will receive Rs 25 lakh if they are killed in a terror related incident, regardless of whether the incident occurs within or outside the Union Territory.
The revised policy also raises compensation for police personnel killed in action to Rs 12 lakh, including Rs 7 lakh from the Police Welfare Fund and Rs 5 lakh from the state government. Families of Special Police Officers will receive Rs 5 lakh, while ex servicemen have been made eligible for Rs 2 lakh in assistance.
Civilians who lose their lives in terror attacks or shelling along the Line of Control will receive Rs 1 lakh. The policy further includes provisions for permanent and partial disability for security personnel injured during operations.
Government employees are also covered under the revised framework. The family of a magistrate who dies while performing official duty will receive Rs 2 lakh, while compensation for other government employees has been fixed at Rs 1 lakh. Financial assistance has also been prescribed for permanent disability and varying levels of injury.
The notification additionally provides Rs 75,000 for terrorists who surrender as part of rehabilitation measures. Families of terrorists who later become informers will receive Rs 1 lakh if they are killed.
For property damaged during counter terror operations, relief has been capped at Rs 10 lakh per case, while compensation for losses caused by shelling, firing or bomb blasts will be granted according to assessed damage within the notified limits. Appeals against compensation assessments can be filed before the Divisional Commissioner within 30 days.
