MARGAO: As the problem of waste disposal in the society is worsening day by day, many panchayats in Salcete taluka are taking initiative to set up waste processing projects for their respective panchayat areas. The Rumdamol-Davorlim Panchayat has also set up a project to process wet waste a few months back, largely eliminating waste disposal in the panchayat area.
However, the panchayat faces problems as the neighbouring panchayats dispose of their waste at the Rumdamal panchayat boundary.
Roomdamal Davorlim Panchayat regularly picks up garbage at the doorsteps of each household in the Panchayat area. Later the waste is also sorted.
Wet waste is processed in a waste processing project to produce biogas, while the dry waste is then refined and sent to the waste management corporation.
Earlier, the panchayat was facing the problem of waste disposal, but since the project is set up to process the wet waste, this problem has been 99 per cent resolved, said Sarpanch Avita Chodankar.
The waste treatment plant has been set up at the cost of about Rs one crore from the Panchayat fund.

Earlier, a security guard was posted here, but if the security guards were on one side, people would throw rubbish on the other side, she said.
“As a result, the panchayat has decided to set up a small garden in the area shortly,” she added.
She is hopeful that people will not dare to throw garbage after seeing a clean place.
She also appealed to the people to take cleanliness as a social responsibility and not to litter around the area.
As the panchayat has 18,000 square meters of space available, the panchayat does not feel the lack of space. Many development works have been completed so far using the 14th Finance Commission and the Panchayat funds.
She said that proposals have been sent for beautification of panchayat house, repair of a football ground, children’s park, beautification of two gardens and installation of sports equipment and partly the work has also been completed.
There are a total of seven wards under Roomdamal Davarli Panchayat.
The names of the Panch members are Deputy Panch Madhukala Shirodkar, Saimulla Faniband, Isha Naik, Vinayak Valvaikar, Vishwadas Naik and Sofia Shaikh.
Garbage dumping at the city limits is not a problem limited to a single panchayat but is common in Salcete taluka.
Few people, whether they live in buildings or locals in the panchayat area, seldom think that we pollute other people’s space in the name of keeping our premises clean.
It is seen that garbage is being dumped on the border of Margao city. The panchayat has repeatedly raised the issue and demanded strict action from the administration.
There is a growing consensus that a concrete decision needs to be taken before the Mini Sonsodo is ready.
