PANAJI: A Sattari resident was detained by the Bicholim police on Friday for allegedly defrauding five people of Rs 21.5 lakh under the guise of obtaining government jobs, bringing yet another incidence of job fraud to the state’s headlines.
Sheetal Sawal of Mauliguem in Bicholim taluka filed a complaint on Friday, alleging that Manikrao Rane of Rawan, Keri in Sattari taluka had scammed her and her neighbors, Pooja Yende, Dinesh Gaonkar, Abhishek Dhuri, and Satywan Gaonkar, out of Rs 21.5 lakh.
In exchange for the substantial amount, the accused allegedly promised government posts in a number of departments. After receiving the report, the police opened an investigation and took Manikrao Rane into custody.
Since then, he has been placed under five days of police custody remand.
