PORVORIM: The House witnessed a heated discussion over private medical college or private nursing college in South Goa District Hospital (SDGH).
The Opposition MLAs demanded immediate scrapping of the proposal claiming whether the Rs 500 cr hospital building to house a private medical college.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane says building infrastructure is for people, not individuals.
“The government has granted administrative approval for refurbishment of the old Hospicio building at Margao and the government has also given administrative approval for starting nursing college,” said Rane.
He further said that private medical college at SDGH is under consideration and that he will not violate CVC guidelines, those who will violate guidelines will go to jail.
LoP Yuri Alemao said the South Goa district hospital was initiated by the Congress government in 2008-09 with the sole objective of providing basic medical care to the people of South Goa.
“We are totally opposed to the government’s move to set up the private medical college at the district hospital,” he said.
MLA Vijai Sardesai reminded the government that the prime objective behind the South Goa district hospital was to tide over the space constraints and provide better medical facilities to the citizens of South Goa.
Asserting that the private medical college was never part of the intended objective of the district hospital, Sardesai demanded that the government become clear on the project before going ahead with the proposal.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane also told the House they they have started an ICU facility at South Goa district hospital. Rane said that it is functioning well. 70-75 per cent of patients are treated in South Goa district hospital. 25 per cent are taken to GMC for care.
AAP MLA Venzy Viegas said that it has been said several times that referrals made by South Goa district hospital to GMC are increasing, a total of 17425 referrals were made in the last 4 years, and this year 2389 referrals to GMC.
“What is the action plan of the government to reduce referrals, especially to the private hospitals,” he questioned
Quepem MLA Altone D’Costa said that GSIDC objected to the Health Department’s proposal of setting up of Cathlab on Terrace of South Goa District Hospital as there is no provision to put a slab on the Terrace.
