PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated that the government intends to install a single underground cable soon to provide internet services, stating that the problem with internet service providers (ISPs) and cable operators in the state has been temporarily resolved by giving them a six-month reprieve.
The service would be available to ISPs and cable operators, he said. “After the Chief Secretary held an interdepartmental meeting, we have temporarily resolved the matter,” he stated.
In light of future needs, we intend to install a single subterranean cable, Sawant stated. Long-term, this will help control the problem. Private operators may join after the government installs this subterranean cable.
After the fiber optic cables snapped, causing an internet outage throughout the state that affected banks, hospitals, private homes, and businesses, the electricity department launched a massive effort to remove cables hanging from electricity poles, which caused chaos among internet service providers and customers.
Later, the government relieved Kashinath Shetye, the drive head executive engineer, and appointed two nodal officers to supervise the infrastructure of the electricity department.
It should be mentioned that the electricity department started the drive after the All Goa Internet Service Providers Association, which had petitioned the Bombay High Court in Goa, was granted a date of March 18 to present its case. However, on Monday, the request that no action be taken until then was rejected.
