MAPUSA: Siolim Veterans defeated Parra Veterans 4-2 via tiebreaker to emerge winners of the 1st All Goa Agnel (Sulcar) Memorial Cup Veterans Football Tournament, organised by Calangute Veterans, at Poriat grounds, Calangute.
In a keenly contested match, both the teams had an equal number of scoring opportunities in the first half, and Parra Veterans tried hard to score, but some resilient defending by the Siolim defenders blocked their attempts on goal, and they could not find any goal and both the teams were goalless till half time.
In the second half, both the strikers found some great form. The para veterans took some bad defending by the siolim defenders proved costly as they allowed the Parra defenders to penetrate their defence and eventually score.
As the second half progressed, the Siolim midfielders managed to keep possession with some crisp passing and controlled the entire game in midfield, and this allowed their strikers to advance forward and break into the defence of the Parra veterans. This style of play gave them the equaliser to level the scores. The match had to be eventually decided on tiebreakers. Some good spot kicks by the Parra strikers managed to win them the game.
Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Calangute sarpanch Joseph Sequeira in the presence of a Panch member from Cobrawaddo Swapnesh Vaigankar and others.
