MARGAO: In a concerted effort to strengthen action against illicit drugs and promote a drug-free society, the South District Police launched a special drive on the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The initiative focused on creating a smoke-free environment around educational institutions and scrutinizing the legitimacy of local businesses, particularly vehicle garages and repair workshops.
As part of the drive, 167 shops and establishments within the vicinity of school premises were inspected to ensure compliance with tobacco control regulations.
The inspections revealed that 141 establishments were found violating the law, prompting legal action under appropriate sections.
This move aims to protect schoolchildren from exposure to tobacco products and create a healthier community environment.
In a parallel operation, the police carried out a detailed inspection of 240 vehicle garages, workshops, and repair shops operating across the South District.
These establishments were checked for valid operating licenses and for the presence of any suspicious or illegal items. Though no immediate violations were reported, the police issued strong advisories to the owners, urging them to remain vigilant and report any suspicious articles or vehicles. They were also briefed on relevant legal provisions in case of violations.
A senior official from the South District Police stated, “These special drives are part of our broader commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of the community, especially the youth. We appreciate the cooperation of the business owners and urge continued support in reporting any suspicious activities.”
The South District Police affirmed that such drives will continue periodically to curb drug-related activities and to ensure public adherence to the law, thereby moving closer to the vision of a drug-free society.
