DABOLIM: SP Gurudas Kadam on Tuesday evening convened a meeting with rent-a-car operators at the Dabolim Airport police station, issuing a stern warning following multiple complaints from tourists alleging instances of overcharging and extortion.
The meeting was attended by several operators functioning in and around the airport area, where police raised concerns over the growing number of grievances reported by visitors. SP Kadam made it clear that any operator found indulging in unfair practices would face strict action under the law, stressing the need to maintain Goa’s image as a tourist-friendly destination.
Police officials informed that complaints primarily relate to inflated pricing, lack of transparency in rental agreements, and coercive behaviour in case of disputes. Operators were directed to adhere strictly to guidelines and ensure that all dealings with customers remain fair and transparent.
Meanwhile, members of the rent-a-car fraternity stated that efforts are being made from within the industry to address these concerns. North Goa Rent-a-Car Association President Nitesh Chodankar said that an association has been formed to streamline operations and bring accountability among operators.
Chodankar further stated that the use of Form 5 has now been made compulsory, ensuring that customers are clearly informed about the terms and conditions of the rental agreement before taking possession of the vehicle. He added that this step is expected to reduce misunderstandings and disputes between operators and customers.
He also said that customers are being consistently advised against driving under the influence of alcohol, noting that safety remains a key concern for both operators and authorities.
Police have reiterated that surprise checks and monitoring will continue in the airport belt to curb any malpractice and ensure a hassle-free experience for tourists arriving in Goa.
