New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday emphasized the importance of self-reliance and domestic manufacturing, announcing that production of AK-203 assault rifles will soon begin in a Russia-assisted factory in Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking at the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show in Greater Noida, the Prime Minister lauded Russia’s role as the “country partner” for the event, calling it a reaffirmation of a long-standing relationship. “This trade show further strengthens a time-tested partnership,” Modi said.
Highlighting Uttar Pradesh’s contribution to India’s manufacturing sector, he noted, “Fifty-five percent of all mobile phones made in India are manufactured in UP.” He added that the state is poised to play a key role in India’s semiconductor industry and defence production. “Very soon, AK-203 rifles will be produced here, and BrahMos missiles are already being manufactured. A dedicated defence corridor is also under development in the state,” he said.
Reiterating his call for Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the Prime Minister urged citizens and businesses to prioritize Indian products and convert global disruptions into opportunities. “Despite global uncertainties, India’s growth remains robust. Disruptions do not stop us; they inspire us to find new directions. Our mantra is Aatmanirbhar Bharat nothing is more helpless than being dependent on others. We want everything from ‘chip to ship’ to be made in India,” he declared.
PM Modi also stressed the importance of quality manufacturing and innovation, cautioning against producing sub-standard goods. “We must increase investment in research and innovation. Trade, life, and the world stop when innovation stops. Time demands a Swadeshi research and Swadeshi development ecosystem, with private sector participation in R&D,” he said.
He further highlighted initiatives like the PM-SVANidhi scheme, which has made formal credit accessible even to small vendors and hawkers.
