CANACONA: Despite the lack of adequate facilities and equipment, the Talpona Coastal Police Station has earned special praise from local residents for its courageous handling of the rescue of a fishing boat with four fishermen that had gone missing in the deep Arabian Sea.
Locals particularly commended Talpona Coastal Police PI Therron S. D’Costa for his personal involvement in the operation. “We approached PI Therron and informed him about the distressing situation. He helped us wholeheartedly and finally brought all our missing fishermen safely back to the jetty himself,” said Rudresh Namshikar.
Namshikar, while expressing gratitude, also voiced concern over the absence of aerial support. “Families of the missing fishermen were in deep distress, with many fainting after hours of crying. Despite repeated assurances, no helicopter was deployed for the search operation. One of our fishing boats was already out at sea searching, and no helicopter was seen conducting aerial rounds. Given the heavy winds and sea conditions, we knew the boat could drift far, and helicopter surveillance was crucial,” he added.
Echoing similar sentiments, Anil Keluskar said the coastal police should not be blamed for infrastructural shortcomings. “Give the coastal police proper boats and equipment. They are doing their duty under severe constraints. We are constructing large police stations but not providing the basic amenities required to operate them. Under such circumstances, PI Therron and his team performed exceedingly well. We thank them,” Keluskar stated.
Pankaj Namshikar praised the bravery displayed by the police team, saying, “Considering the seriousness of the situation, the manner in which PI Therron and his team ventured into the sea deserves high appreciation. I urge everyone present to thank and congratulate PI Therron for this brave act. Without worrying about what resources were available, he arranged whatever boat he could and ventured out into the sea. We thank him and the entire staff of Talpona Coastal Police Station.”
Talpona Coastal Police Station PI Therron S. D’Costa, accompanied by two PSIs and a constable, ventured into the sea at around 1 pm in a specially requisitioned speedboat amid rising public anger over the perceived delay in rescue efforts. After camping at sea for over five hours, the police team returned at around 6.45 pm with all four fishermen and the fishing boat safely to the jetty.
