MAPUSA: A concrete slab of an old building collapsed today morning at Mapusa damaging parked cars and bikes.
As per information the building was in dilapidated condition and was unsafe.Due to the collapse around 3 parked cars and 4 bikes were damaged. Also one pedestrian sustained minor injuries.
The Mapusa municipality may have to grapple with a simple question – whether the civic body will act only in the event of a building collapse and whether the Goa Municipalities Act does not empower the local body to initiate preventive measures to ensure public safety.
Questions are raised about whether these buildings have all received the structural stability certificates, certifying they are safe for occupation.
And, whether there’s no political will to find out the number of old and dilapidated buildings which pose a risk to the lives of citizens as well as motorists.
