VERNA: Following the heavy downpour, huge boulders came down crashing on Verna- Loutolim bypass road this morning, causing major traffic blockades on the road.
The Verna Fire station staff quickly cleared boulders which slid down at Verna-Loutolim’s new bypass road with the help of mechanised cranes and water cannons. National Highway Authority needs to take precautionary measures to avoid landslides in future, say citizens.
For the last two to three days, there have been continuous rain showers in Goa. The elevated areas and the hillocks due to the heavy and regular rainfall have loosened the elevated land, and this has led to the several landslides in Verna and nearby hilly areas where the hillocks have been cut. The new road connectivity has been made.
On Friday morning, two huge boulders came rolling down the Loutolim-Vwrna bypass Highway due to the massive chunk of the landslide from the hillock. This landslide caught the attention of many commuters, and the pics went viral on social media platforms.
When contacted Dilip Bicholkar, Verna Fire station in charge, informed that they cleared the huge Boulders which had rolled down due to the landslide with the use of mechanised cranes by the Verna Fire station staff. The mud which had spread all over the road had been washed off with the use of water cannons.
He further said that it is the responsibility of the National Highway Authority to take preventive measures to avoid such landslides near highways in the near future.
One commuter named Krushal said that he wasn’t expecting such a landslide on a newly opened highway road. Commuters need to be careful while driving.
Another cab driver said that proper care needs to be taken by the highway authority so that such an incident may not happen. If the landslide had happened during night time, then chances were high of vehicular accidents.
