OLD GOA: Old Goa Police Station registered two separate offences under Section 11(2)(a) of the Public Gambling Act, 1976, after two persons were allegedly caught red-handed accepting gambling bets on numerical figures from members of the public near St Cruz market in Tiswadi.
In the first case, Old Goa Police registered Crime No. 68/2026 on May 11 at around 10.21 pm based on a complaint filed by PSI Diptaraj Gaude. Police said that at around 8.45 pm near Church St Cruz Market, Tiswadi, accused Santosh Tukaram Gawas, 40, originally from Dodamarg in Sindhudurg district and presently residing at St Cruz, was allegedly found accepting bets in a public place.
Police seized cash amounting to Rs 1,650 in different denominations along with other gambling articles from his possession. The accused was arrested at around 11.09 pm and later released on bail the same night at about 11.56 pm. Investigation is being conducted by PSI Diptaraj Gaude.
In another similar case, Old Goa Police Station registered Crime No. 69/2026 at around 10.49 pm based on a complaint lodged by ASI Abdulla Sayed.
According to police, at around 8.46 pm near Panchayat St Cruz Market, Tiswadi, accused Pramod Laxman Gawas, 50, originally from Dodamarg in Maharashtra and currently residing near Bappa Hotel at Merces, was allegedly caught accepting bets on numerical figures from the public.
Police seized Rs 800 in cash in different denominations along with gambling-related materials from his possession. The accused was arrested at around 11 pm and later released shortly after midnight at around 12.02 am.
Further investigation in the case is being carried out by ASI Abdulla Sayed of Old Goa Police Station.
