PANAJI: Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik today has demand shifting of Bainguinim solid waste treatment plant out of Old Goa.
MoS Naik was addressing the media after addressing a press conference along with state President Damu Naik and MoS Jitin Prasada on Union Budget 2025.
“I am personally opposing the construction of a waste treatment plant at Bainguinim. There is need for the government to look into other sites for the project,” said MoS
He further said that state government need to reconsider the proposal in public interest.
“Old Goa is a world tourism site; one has to understand that; i have raised by apprehensions in the past also and will try to convince government again,” he added
Although Naik insisted that he had nothing against the facility, this is the second time the Union MoS has opposed the plant’s construction at Bainguinim, arguing that the location chosen is incorrect and that the government must move it for the sake of the general public.
A month back, Minister for Waste Management Babush Monserrate has reaffirmed that the Bainguinim waste treatment plant will be established, despite opposition from MLA Rajesh Faldesai.
Monserrate stated that while the MLA is focused on protecting the interests of his constituents, the plant’s implementation will proceed as it is a project that benefits the larger community.
“This project is essential, and no one should take this issue personally,” Monserrate had remarked, emphasizing the broader advantages of the facility.
He also noted that while Faldesai is likely to participate in the foundation stone-laying ceremony, his role in the project’s completion remains uncertain.
