PANAJI: Goa’s motorsport scene celebrated a proud moment as elite National Motocross and INRC Champion Vaibhav Marathe delivered an impressive performance at the prestigious Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC). Held from April 25 to 27 at the internationally acclaimed Madras International Circuit, the event was hosted by the Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC) and sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). This year’s rally was officially titled the Indu Chandhok Memorial Champions Trophy, drawing elite competitors from across the Asia-Pacific region.
Representing Goa at the high-octane event, Vaibhav Marathe demonstrated his trademark skill, speed, and consistency across a grueling three-day schedule. The rally featured a mix of high-speed tarmac circuits and technically challenging gravel stages, pushing both man and machine to their limits. While he narrowly missed a podium finish, Vaibhav’s exceptional performance earned him 5th place overall and a ₹1 lakh cash prize (awarded as ₹50,000 + ₹50,000), reaffirming his stature as one of Goa’s top motorsport athletes.
Alongside Vaibhav, fellow Goan racers Aditya Naik and Omkar Naik also participated. Both drivers showed promise but faced unfortunate technical issues during the race — Aditya’s car suffered a severe breakdown mid-event, while Omkar encountered similar mechanical trouble, forcing early exits for both.
The event’s prize distribution ceremony was attended by Shri Govind Gaude, Hon’ble Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Goa, who was the Chief Guest. Welcomed warmly by event sponsor Shri Vamsi Merla, the President of MMSC, and other dignitaries, Shri Gaude spent over two hours at the track, witnessing the fierce competition and engaging with participants.
In his address, the Minister praised the caliber of talent on display and lauded the performance of Goan drivers, especially Vaibhav Marathe. He also made a significant announcement, revealing plans for the development of a dedicated motorsport track in Goa, aimed at boosting motorsport tourism and offering a professional platform for local athletes to compete nationally and internationally.
Congratulating Vaibhav on his achievement, Shri Gaude assured continued government support to promote motorsports in Goa. “Vaibhav Marathe’s performance is a proud moment for all of us. The government stands committed to nurturing this sport and enabling more Goan youth to excel in this thrilling and competitive arena,” he said.
As motorsports gain momentum in the state, Vaibhav’s achievement serves as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring racers, highlighting Goa’s growing presence on the national motorsport map.
