New Delhi: India’s R Vaishali delivered a standout performance to win the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament 2026, securing a place in the World Championship match against Ju Wenjun later this year. The 24 year old sealed her triumph in the final round with a composed victory over Kateryna Lagno, finishing with 8.5 points out of 14.
Vaishali’s win marked a remarkable turnaround, as she began the tournament among the lower rated participants. Her performance drew comparisons to D Gukesh, who achieved a similar breakthrough in 2024 by winning the Candidates against expectations.
In the decisive round, Vaishali displayed exceptional control and precision. Playing with the white pieces, she gained an early advantage through a well prepared opening and gradually converted it into a winning position. Maintaining a slight material edge, she navigated the middlegame with accuracy and handled critical moments with calm decision making, ensuring there was no opportunity for a comeback.
Her victory was also influenced by results elsewhere. Fellow Indian player Divya Deshmukh held Bibisara Assaubayeva to a draw, a crucial outcome that prevented a tie at the top and confirmed Vaishali’s outright win.
The achievement is even more significant given her recent struggles. After a disappointing outing at the Chennai Grand Masters, she had briefly considered skipping key qualifying events. However, she persevered and delivered when it mattered most.
Vaishali had finished joint second in the previous edition with 7.5 points, but improved her tally this time to claim the title. Strong performances throughout the tournament, including important games against Tan Zhongyi, played a key role in her success.
With this victory, Vaishali now stands on the brink of history as she prepares to challenge for the world title.
