VELSAO: A large-scale fish harvest at Velsao’s historic lake turned into a celebration of tradition and community participation, with residents gathering to take part in the long-standing practice that has been preserved for generations.
The harvest attracted people of all ages, with many villagers describing it as a reminder of Goa’s deep-rooted connection to its traditional water systems and rural customs. Locals said the event showcased how community-managed lakes continue to support both livelihoods and biodiversity.
Elders from the village expressed concern over the gradual decline of traditional ponds and lakes due to rapid development and changing lifestyles. They noted that the successful harvest has inspired many youngsters to take renewed interest in preserving local heritage and protecting natural resources.
Residents also highlighted the cultural and environmental significance of maintaining such historic lakes, saying they serve as important ecosystems while also strengthening community bonds through collective activities passed down over the years.
