MARGAO: The District and Sessions Court in Margao will render a decision in the rape and murder case of Danielle McLaughlin, a 28-year-old Irish-British national whose body was discovered in the South Goan village of Canacona in 2017.
Vikat Bhagat, a young man from Canacona, has been charged by the local police with raping and killing the victim after attending a Holi celebration.
According to Vikram Varma, the attorney for Andrea Brannigan, the mother of the victim, the District and Sessions Court in Margao will issue the ruling on Thursday afternoon.
According to him, the accused was notified via video conference that the verdict will be delivered on Thursday when the matter went to hearing on Wednesday.
At the moment, the accused is being held at Central jail, Colvale. On January 14, 2017, the victim’s body was discovered in a Canacona forest.
The attorney stated that the prosecution had shown sufficient evidence against the defendant during the trial. He clarified that if the victim of rape is still alive, direct evidence can be obtained.
However, the prosecution has relied on circumstantial evidence to support its case because she is no longer alive.
