THIVIM: A rally against the proposed sale of 6.33 lakh sqm of Tivim Comunidade land for a private university was held today near the Tivim Panchayat Building.
The protest saw participation from over 100 villagers, led by former MLA Kiran Kandolkar and Tivim Sarpanch Venkatesh Shirodkar, who urged locals to unite to safeguard Goa’s natural heritage and oppose the project.
The Colvale police, under PI Vijay Rane, deployed a heavy force at the venue to maintain law and order. PI Rane personally monitored the situation to ensure peaceful proceedings.
Speaking at the rally, Kiran Kandolkar warned of intensified protests if the government proceeds with the project. He announced plans to organize a march to the Chief Minister’s residence and disrupt the CM’s events, calling the sale of the land a betrayal of local interests.
Kandolkar praised Mayem MLA Premendra Shet for standing with villagers to cancel the proposed garbage treatment plant in Mayem. He sharply criticized Tivim MLA Nilkanth Halarnkar, accusing him of destroying Goa’s hills and village environment, and suggested he prepare for retirement.
The protest has intensified the demand for the government to prioritize the protection of Goa’s community resources and environmental integrity over private projects.
