New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the opposition, saying its repeated electoral defeats stem from an inability to understand public service, governance discipline and the development focused approach followed by the current government. Addressing a public gathering in Nava Vanjar village near Ahmedabad, Shah referred to a recent remark by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who had questioned why his party keeps losing elections.
Calling it a strange and revealing question, Shah said the answer lies in the contrast between the work culture of the ruling alliance and that of the opposition. He said once the opposition leadership understands the importance of consistent development, accountability and grassroots engagement, the reason behind their defeats would become clear.
Highlighting governance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah said the government has prioritised resolving people’s problems even when demands are not formally raised. He cited efforts to identify families that were earlier given temporary settlements and later abandoned, stating that they have now been traced and provided with proper land ownership documents. According to him, this sense of responsibility towards citizens reflects a strong public service ethic that was first established in Gujarat and later expanded across the country.
Shah said instead of appreciating this approach, the opposition leadership was focused on issues that fall outside its role, referring to debates around electoral roll revisions. Without naming Rahul Gandhi directly, he said the opposition leader should be prepared for more defeats in the future, adding that setbacks in states like West Bengal and Tamil Nadu were also inevitable.
Reaffirming confidence in the ruling alliance, Shah said the government would return to power in 2029 under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. He attributed this confidence to the party’s principles and its deep connection with the public.
He also accused opposition parties of opposing major decisions that enjoy widespread public support, including the construction of the Ram Temple, national security operations, action against illegal infiltration, reforms related to Article 370, triple talaq, the Kashi corridor and the move towards a Common Civil Code. Shah said when opposition parties oppose initiatives backed by the people, they naturally lose public trust and electoral support.
He concluded by asserting that sustained development and decisive governance remain the foundation of the ruling party’s continued success.
