CANACONA: With neither sides of NH-66 road at Gulem is safe for motorists, Heavy vehicles especially inter-state vehicles continues going down the road in Canacona section of National Highway.
Late, Thursday night, yet another loaded truck bearing registration no. AP 21-TE 3699 coming from Margao and going towards Karnataka fell in the fields below after its wheels went over the road by inches.
Driver and a Cleaner escaped without any major injuries, informed a source.
According to the driver, while driving on the straight road, he has just moved the steering to the slight lest to give a proper way to an oncoming vehicle, and the entire truck went down the road. The loaded bags in the truck also stumbled out and partly spread down. The incident had taken place soon after coming down the Karmalghat slope, and the truck was driving on a straight road. Incidentally, the Highway section particularly in Gulem has become more treacherous and dangerous, catching most of the inter-state vehicles off-guard.
Locals at Gulem informs only in recent times, around 7 vehicles and mostly outstation vehicles went down the fields below on either sides of the highway. ‘There is not even an inch of space beyond the Tar-section of the road, making it very vulnerable and unsafe for any vehicles to drive safely. This means you miss the tar-section of the road by a whisker and you are down in the fields below’., said a resident.
People also blamed PWD for remaining a mute spectator to the unhealthy happening, even though there is availability of the required land to widen the road on either sides and the mishaps continue to rage on unabated
