PANAJI: For the 2009 murder of a young girl, “serial killers” Chandrakant Talwar and Cyron Rodrigues were given life sentences by the Children’s Court. The two are already serving life sentences for two other murders that were reported in the same year; this is their third life sentence.
In a ruling released on Friday, the court determined that Talwar, a resident of Panaji, and Rodrigues, a resident of Merces, had lured a 16-year-old Taleigao girl under the false pretense of driving her to her Board exam center and killing her in the moving car at Verna. Last month, the Court found them guilty and adjourned the case to consider sentencing, which was subsequently ordered.
According to the Crime Branch’s charge sheet, the defendants, who were typically joined by a small accomplice, used a cable wire to strangle the victim. They then stole her valuables and tried to burn the body next to a Verna tower.
In the past, Talwar and Rodrigues were found guilty and given a life sentence in prison for the killings of Malati Yadav and Sharmila Mandrekar of Bicholim by the additional sessions court in Mapusa. In a different case, though, they were found not guilty of the murder of a Verna fisherwoman. Robbery was the main reason for the crimes.
