CANACONA – The Beautified ferry wharf/ramp at Galgibaga and Maxem has become a home to anti-social elements in Canacona.
According to fishermen of the locality, late nights booze parties are held on either side of the Galgibaga river even during late hours, and empty glass bottles, including beer and other alcoholic beverages, are not only left broken all around but are also thrown in the river.
This poses not only a risk but a great danger to the fishermen who also uses the sides/banks alongside the ramp for stationing their boats and offloading their catch (fish).
“Many times, we got glass cuts to our legs and hands while offloading fish and parking our Canoes from the strewn broken bottles on the ramp and river water,” fishermen said.
It may be recalled that due to the people’s demand, Ex- Canacona MLA/Ex-Dy Speaker Isidore Fernandes persued and both the sides of Galgibaga river (on Galgibaga and Maxem sides) ferry ramps where Tar(Ferry)/Motor Boats were operated) were beautified, especially the Maxem wharf, for the benefit of senior citizens and others.
Locals now allege that some youths are misusing these ramps, which are located almost underneath the 4-Lane Galgibaga-Maxem Bridge, and even engage in drinking sessions in late at night hours.
People have demanded a police beat team to patrol this area, especially during late night hours or beyond 11 pm.
“The problem is they drink and under intoxication throw away the empty bottles into the river water and also brakes down the bottles strewing around the bottle pieces on the ramp, which is not only used by the public, but the local fishermen”, informed a resident demanding police patrolling the area.
