PANAJI: Goa’s Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that the administration is presently in the planning stages of establishing a third district. He informed the Legislative Assembly that the government-appointed committee’s report would be completed before a final decision is reached.
The proposal is being actively considered, according to Revenue Minister Atanasio Monserrate, who also stated that a committee headed by the Chief Secretary has already been established to assess Goa’s need for a third district.
There is already a committee headed by the Chief Secretary to discuss the details and weigh the advantages and disadvantages of the new district. The minister responded, “It will evaluate if a third district in Goa is necessary and whether it will contribute to the advancement of people in general and underdeveloped talukas in particular.
In addition, the committee must recommend the district’s boundaries while taking the public’s opinion, infrastructure availability, economic status, and population into consideration.
Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar made the suggestion during the discussion that the newly created district might be advantageous for the less developed areas of Canacona, Sanvordem, and Quepem. Altone D’Costa, a member of the Quepem Municipal Assembly, endorsed his idea that the headquarters be located there and offered land for the new district’s administrative structure.
D’Costa, on the other hand, disagreed with the notion that Quepem is “backward,” claiming that despite insufficient infrastructure supplied by the government, Quepem residents had achieved success in a variety of professions.
“Quepem people cannot be called backward,” he said. Nilesh Cabral, a Curchorem MLA, also pleaded with the government not to characterize Ponda as being in the past. “We might as well be dubbed super backwards if Ponda is deemed backwards,” he declared, endorsing the government’s proposal to inspect the area before reaching a judgment and requesting that it cover areas with sizable Scheduled Tribe populations.
