PONDA: With 55,000 stray dogs counted so far around the state, Goa is facing a stunning reality amid the mounting worry over stray dog attacks. It is anticipated that the survey will be finished next month.
The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services initiated a house-to-house survey of owned dogs in November 2024 as an extension of the 21st National Livestock Census, and this data is part of the ongoing livestock census. A committed group of about 110 enumerators has been sent out to carry out the survey and gather information online.
According to AHVS Director V P Singh, who spoke at a news conference today, local Panchayats and non-governmental organizations are working together to gather statistics on stray dogs and cats.
To help detect and manage the problem of stray animals, the government is also working to increase public awareness.
A precise inventory of livestock, including cattle, buffalo, goats, pigs, and poultry, is created by the livestock census, which is carried out every five years. Campaigns for immunization, initiatives for animal welfare, and enhancing the health of livestock are all supported by this data.
Singh added that in order to guarantee data accuracy through real-time monitoring, a four-layer structure comprising field workers, supervisors, and authorities is also incorporated for the ongoing census. Additionally, the census promotes the preservation of rare breeds and aids in the management of illnesses like FMD and PPR.
“In Goa, the census is progressing well and is set to be completed by next month,” he stated.
