New Delhi:
In the wake of Team India’s dismal performance in recent Test series, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering a significant revamp of the team’s protocols. The board’s plans include reinstating fitness rules that were a hallmark of Virat Kohli’s captaincy era, along with stringent measures to enhance team discipline and cohesion.
Fitness Standards and Family Restrictions
The BCCI is set to reintroduce the mandatory yo-yo fitness test, a criterion that was pivotal during Kohli’s tenure. This decision is a direct response to the team’s poor showings against New Zealand and Australia, where India suffered a 0-3 defeat at home and a 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, respectively.
The medical team will now focus on ensuring players meet specific fitness standards for selection, moving beyond the sole focus on injury prevention that had been the norm. The previous management had removed the yo-yo test to reduce the injury toll, but the current regime believes its reinstatement is necessary to prevent player complacency.
Impact of Family Presence and Travel Rules
Officials are also concerned that the presence of family members during overseas tours can be a distraction for players, affecting their performance. To address this, the BCCI is planning to limit the stay of family members to no more than two weeks during tours that extend beyond one and a half months. This move aims to ensure that players remain focused on the game rather than being consumed by their personal lives.
Additionally, the board has introduced a rule requiring all players to travel together in team buses, eliminating the option for separate travel. This change is designed to promote team unity and discipline, as recent instances of players traveling separately were seen as disruptive to the team’s cohesion.
Restoring Team Unity and Performance
The BCCI’s efforts are geared towards restoring the team’s performance and discipline, which have been lacking since the changes in team management. By focusing on fitness criteria and enforcing stricter travel and family visitation rules, the board hopes to recreate the environment that led to India’s success during Kohli’s captaincy.
These changes come at a critical time, with significant tournaments like the Champions Trophy approaching, and the BCCI is keen to ensure that the team is well-prepared and cohesive to tackle these challenges.
