PANAJI: Six people were taken into custody by the Panaji Police on suspicion of killing a buffalo inside a pump house in a field next to the Taleigao Community Hall.
Nathan D’Souza (20), Bablu Sonar (25), Sudarshan Shah (18), Deepak Vishwakarma (52), Bhupesh Karala (42) and Kamal Singh are the names of the accused. Police sources claim that at around three in the morning, the Panjim Police Station received a call reporting that someone was unlawfully killing an animal.
When the police arrived on the scene, they apprehended the individuals who were killing the animal. In the pump house, the team discovered buffalo footprints. The cadaver was taken to the Veterinary Hospital in Caranzalem for a post-mortem after panchanama was performed in front of two panchas.
PSI Suraj Madgaonkar is investigating a formal complaint that was filed at the Panjim Police Station under Section 325 of the BNS (killing an animal without cause) and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960.
The farmers recently brought a buffalo to the police station because they were tired of the animals damaging their crops and the police’s lack of response to their concerns. The bovine, according to the farmers, was responsible for consuming their crops.
Sociopolitical activist Cecille Rodrigues, Nathan D’Souza, and seasoned farmer Francis Coelho spearheaded the spontaneous “arrest.”
Farmers asserted that the majority of the wandering animals were from Santa Cruz and accused the local panchayat of failing to build a livestock pound on the Taleigao Plateau on property provided by the Comunidade.
