PANAJI: With the monsoon becoming active in the last few days in Goa. The state received 96.97 inches of rain to date which is 56.9 percent higher than normal.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for today forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong surface winds in North and South Goa.
The IMD, with the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Service (INCOIS), has also issued a high wave warning for the coast of Goa, particularly from Chapora to Panaji (Malim).
Up to 886 tree-falling incidents have been reported this month alone, and several red alert weather warnings have coincided with them. In just 1.5 months, the State has recorded over 50% excess seasonal rainfall.
One of these incidents occurred when a big raintree fell and crushed a bike and a moving taxi close to Panaji Church. Vehicles suffered severe damage, and three occupants were hurt. People contacted emergency services and raced to their aid.
Since the start of the monsoon, the State has seen a trail of devastation including landslides, accidents, tree falls, water logging, and house collapses.
There were two reported accidents on Zuari Bridge on Thursday morning. In one, Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar’s car was involved, but he and the other six passengers were able to escape unharmed. The driver and passenger of another car-truck collision suffered injuries.
