MARGAO: Following the disaster of tarballs turning up on many beaches of Goa, AAP Goa Vice President Capt Venzy Viegas Swung into action at Benaulim.
After making a public call yesterday, Capt Viegas, with 50 AAP volunteers and many Benaulim residents, turned up on Benaulim beach at the wee hours of Thursday morning. The team painstakingly cleaned the tarballs from the beach, even digging out those that had been covered up by the sand. 36 bags of Tarballs were cleared by the volunteers, and the bags will be deposited at the contractor whose job it was to clean it.
The sitting MLA of Benaulim Churchill Alemao was once again found napping on this issue as he had not ensured the contractors who clean the beach do their job. In fact, scared that AAP was taking action, the MLA immediately announced a beach clean of his own in a copycat move.
Benaulim beach saw the deposit of fist-sized tarballs for the first time this week. Despite having a BJP Govt both in the state and in the centre, the BJP has been unable to act on the causes and prevent relapses. Moreover, swift cleaning of these beaches too are a distant dream. This impacts Goa as a tourist destination, but it also has impacted fisherfolk who have to dump out their catch that cannot be cleaned.
The Govt was once again caught napping as these tar balls turned up in Salcete and far north as Anjuna. In Benaulim, the sitting MLA Churchill Alemao was caught napping on a major issue again, only hurriedly running into action after Capt Viegas’ appeal to Benaulim residents. The sitting MLA has not ensured the beach cleaning contractors do their job leaving the clean up to AAP and residents of Benaulim.
“Once again, we are seeing that the Govt machinery is sleeping, first in allowing these huge tarballs to come on our beach and second in failing to clear them and exacerbating the problem. Once again, we are seeing that Benaulim residents have to take things into their own hands,” said AAP Goa ZP Hanzel Fernandes.
“Today, along with the residents of Benaulim and AAP Volunteers, we cleaned more than 36 tar balls from the Benaulim beach. It’s shocking that contractor or the Govt or the MLA are interested in cleaning this up or taking the initiative,” said AAP Goa Vice President Capt Venzy.
“Taking the initiative, we will be taking these 36 bags and handing them over to the agency to prove their incompetence. It is about time somebody held these corrupt contractors and agencies resposnible,” said Capt Venzy Viegas.
