CANACONA: A plywood consignment-loaded Kerala registration truck fell on its side at the foot of accident prone-Karmalghat at Gulem early Monday morning.
While the interstate Truck (KL-41 K-3896) suffered heavy damages as it slides over the steep edge of the narrow NH-66 road, the driver and cleaner were lucky to escaped unhurt in the early Monday morning accident.
According to truck driver (Pravin), on way from Kerala to Panaji, while negotiating the narrow NH-66 road at Gulem, he went on the road edge to give a safe passage to an oncoming vehicle.
“However, due to the steep cut onto the tar section of the highway road, the truck suddenly swirled and fell off the road down into the fields at about 3 am. The roads without any space on its sides, are very treacherous and dangerous at this highway section”, complained the driver speaking to media at the site.
The driver further alleged that the truck has suffered heavy damages in the fall and, perhaps lakhs of rupees will be required to make the truck road worthy.
Incidentally, while PWD is already executing the road widening works at the narrow Gulem section of NH66, and the also the widening works are also underway at the steep accident prone Karmalghat sharp turn, the accidents/mishaps saga mostly involving inter-state vehicles at this stretch has returned back with the early Monday morning mishap.
People continue to blame the indifferent attitude of PWD engineers to checkmate and correct the road alignment anamolies of the highway (NH66) stretch at Gulem, and are responsible for warning the bad name to the Karmalghat section as Moron-Ghat or Yamraj Ghat.
Incidentally, while road widening works are being partially executed on this stretch, trees which have come in-between these widening works are yet to be felled. Besides, people also complained of a half-hearted widening of the Sharp and deathkneel Turn of Karmalghat is being carried out inspite of a proper widening of the sharp turn.-
