NEW DELHI: The safety of Indian seafarers and the security of Indian tankers were discussed during a telephone conversation between National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei on October 12, as concerns grow over maritime security in the Gulf region.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that the two officials discussed bilateral relations, the regional situation and international developments during their conversation. Maritime safety, particularly the protection of Indian crew members and vessels, was also raised.
The Iranian Embassy in India separately confirmed the discussion, stating that the officials exchanged views on recent regional and international developments and matters of mutual interest.
The conversation comes amid a series of incidents involving commercial vessels carrying Indian seafarers in strategically important maritime waters.
On October 11, the Nicaragua flagged tanker MT Petro Dolphin, carrying 11 Indian seafarers, was reportedly targeted in a drone attack at Sohar Anchorage. Nine crew members were rescued safely, while two Indian nationals remained missing. Search and rescue operations were underway in coordination with the local Coast Guard and other authorities.
On the same day, the Marshall Islands flagged tanker MT Valthera was struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire onboard. All 11 Indian seafarers aboard the vessel were reported safe.
Earlier, on October 9, the Panama flagged crude oil tanker MT GEM NO. 2, carrying 22 Indian nationals, was subjected to a drone attack at Sharjah Anchorage. All crew members were reported safe following the incident.
The incidents have intensified concerns over the security of commercial shipping routes across the Gulf and surrounding waters. The Strait of Hormuz is particularly significant because it serves as a major transit route for global oil and energy shipments.
India has a substantial number of nationals working in the international maritime sector, making the safety of seafarers and merchant vessels an important concern amid rising regional tensions.
The discussions between Doval and Rezaei underline the importance of diplomatic engagement as India seeks to safeguard its maritime interests and protect its citizens working aboard commercial vessels in the region.
