PANAJI: Minister Sudin Dhavalikar has attributed the state’s ongoing power shortage to rising temperatures, a sharp increase in electricity consumption and reduced power generation across the country.
Explaining the situation, Dhavalikar said the heatwave had pushed up electricity demand among households and industries, while coal supply constraints and a reported 10–12% decline in nationwide power generation had further affected availability.
He also highlighted the growing pressure on the power grid during peak hours, noting that changing climatic conditions had contributed to increased consumption.
To ease the shortage, Goa has procured an additional 50 MW of electricity and requires around 30 MW more to meet the state’s demand.
Dhavalikar said additional power was being purchased at higher rates, with prices varying according to availability and the period of procurement.
Minister Dhavalikar also criticised the changing nature of Narakasur celebrations, expressing concern that the traditional festival is increasingly taking on a political dimension during the election period.
Dhavalikar said the celebrations should remain within reasonable limits and questioned practices involving loud festivities and the collection of donations.
He emphasised the need to maintain the traditional spirit of the festival while preventing activities that could create public inconvenience or safety concerns.
Reiterating his opposition to certain aspects of Narakasur celebrations, the minister said his concerns were linked to the possibility of accidents and other losses.
