PANAJI: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has approved a new medical college in Goa with 50 MBBS seats, starting from the academic year 2027–28.
Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant expressed heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J P Nadda for the approval, describing it as a wonderful Navratri gift to Goa and a boost for aspiring medical students.
Sources said the new institution will initially offer 50 MBBS seats, with 50 per cent reserved for Goan students. The college is expected to expand opportunities for local students seeking admission to medical courses and strengthen Goa’s medical education infrastructure.
The approval also comes amid limitations on expanding the intake at Goa Medical College (GMC). With the National Medical Commission (NMC) currently restricting approvals beyond 150 seats per medical college, GMC has reached its maximum permissible intake under existing guidelines and cannot expand further without substantial infrastructure upgrades.
“The government had moved a proposal in June last year to increase GMC’s intake from 200 to 250 seats, but the proposal is yet to be considered due to infrastructure requirements. We were fortunate to receive approval for 200 seats,” sources said.
The new medical college is expected to help address the demand for MBBS seats in the state while creating additional opportunities for Goan students. The development marks a significant step towards strengthening healthcare and medical education in Goa.
