By Pradeep Padgaonkar Health Minister Vishwajit Rane’s declaration that Goa is on the verge of eradicating malaria is certainly heartening. After all, any move towards eliminating vector-borne diseases deserves applause. But such announcements must be viewed through a lens of ground reality, especially when Goa continues to witness a massive influx of migrant labourers every month, many from states where malaria remains rampant. Construction sites, mining operations, and infrastructural mega-projects across the state are heavily dependent on migrant workers. These workers often live in temporary settlements or labour camps where hygiene and sanitation are severely compromised. Add to this the…

Development is often touted as the answer to progress, prosperity, and modernisation. But when development becomes unchecked, unbalanced, and top-down, it can overwhelm the very communities it intends to uplift. The case of Loliem-Polem, a quiet panchayat nestled in Goa’s southernmost tip, is fast becoming a textbook example of this looming dilemma. In a span of just nine months, the Comunidade of Loliem-Polem has given the nod to seven major projects that together will consume an astounding 27.3 lakh square meters — more than one-third of its total 81 lakh sq mtrs land. On paper, these projects appear diverse, forward-looking…

Team Goemkarponn MARGAO: The South Goa BJP district president has questioned Prakash Velip’s commitment to the party, alleging he never supported BJP candidates and even campaigned against South Goa Zilla Panchayat (ZP) Chairperson Sanjana Velip during local elections. Asked about possible disciplinary action over Prakash Velip’s recent remarks critical of the government, district president Gaonkar dismissed the idea, noting that Velip himself had publicly acknowledged he is not a BJP member. “He admitted in a press conference that he is not with the party, so there’s no question of taking action,” Gaonkar said. Gaonkar further clarified that there is no…
