New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said the newly formed BJP government in West Bengal had transferred 600 hectares of land to the Border Security Force within just seven days of assuming office, paving the way for the construction of fencing along the India Bangladesh border.
Addressing a gathering in Gandhinagar, Shah described the move as a major step toward strengthening border security and fulfilling a key promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party during the state elections. He stated that the land would be used to accelerate fencing work aimed at curbing infiltration and improving surveillance along sensitive stretches of the border.
The Home Minister also announced that the state government had handed over an additional 121 hectares of land in the strategically important Chicken’s Neck corridor to the Centre. The narrow corridor, which connects northeastern states with the rest of India, is considered one of the country’s most sensitive security zones.
Shah credited the rapid transfer of land to the change in political leadership in the state and said the BJP’s governance had strengthened coordination between the state and central governments. He added that the party’s influence now extended across the entire route of the river Ganga under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking on illegal immigration, Shah claimed that infiltration from across the Bangladesh border had become routine during the previous administration led by Mamata Banerjee. He asserted that the situation had changed after the BJP government established detention centres in the state.
According to Shah, some illegal infiltrators had already begun returning voluntarily to their native places. He said authorities were willing to assist those leaving on their own and indicated that no legal action would be initiated against individuals who departed before a formal identification drive began.
Reaffirming the Centre’s stand on illegal immigration, Shah said the government remained committed to identifying and deporting every illegal infiltrator residing in the country.
