PANAJI: Ahead of the 2022 elections, Congress is set to make its base strong in Bardez- home to crucial seven Assembly constituencies- as it has en route into the taluka, with Porvorim as its first focus.
Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte, who is all set to join Congress by the end of his term as a legislator, today extended support to India’s oldest political outfit through his supporters.
Former ZP members and panch members from Penha de Franca, Salvador do Mundo & Succoro, joined Congress in the presence of party president Girish Chodankar and Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat.
Khaunte is a two-time MLA from Porvorim and has been ruling the local bodies since then.
More faces from Bardez taluka are expected to join Congress ahead of crucial assembly elections next year in February.
‘Many people have shown interest; in the days to come, you will come to know,” Chodankar said when asked about Khaunte joining them.
He said that the people have realised that many parties have arrived in Goa to split anti-BJP votes.
“Congress has become a rallying point for the people who want to throw out BJP,” Chodankar said.
One of the supporters, Marina Moraes said that people of Goa are fed up with the BJP, and the Congress is the only alternative.
Meanwhile, the Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat said blamed the BJP government led by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for organising expensive women parliament events while ignoring the welfare of women in the state.
