PANAJI: AAP Goa President Valmiki Naik launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, accusing the BJP government of wasting taxpayers’ money on a weeklong celebration of the new Assembly building while failing to convene a weeklong Assembly session.
Naik said Sawant had “turned himself into a sad joke” by organising a weeklong celebration for the Assembly building instead of ensuring that the legislature functioned for an extended session.
“The Chief Minister has no courage to hold a weeklong Assembly session, but he has organised a weeklong event to celebrate the Assembly building,” Naik said, questioning the priorities of the state government.
The AAP leader also accused the BJP government of using public funds to impress its leadership in Delhi rather than addressing issues concerning Goans.
Naik further criticised the arrangements made for Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla during his visit, objecting to the use of traditional tarangs, which he said are meant for Gods, and chhatras, traditionally associated with kings.
He questioned the appropriateness of using such traditional symbols for a political dignitary and alleged that the government was turning a state event into an exercise in political showmanship.
Naik said the government should focus on making the Assembly a meaningful forum for debating issues affecting Goans instead of spending taxpayers’ money on elaborate celebrations.
