CANACONA – The Health Team of Canacona inspects two Health Hazard causing sites and issues letters to the authority concerned to take immediate measures to keep the sites clean and hazard-free.
The Canacona Municipal Council’s Garbage Treatment Plant (GTP) at Dumane and the municipal Fish Market at Chaudi are a bone of contention in the taluka for the more and lesser amount of release of polluted water in the open and causing grave contamination of the surroundings and the aggravating atmosphere in Canacona.
The Inspection is carried out by Health Officer Dr Jose Tavares and Sanitary Inspector Pranay Naik at the GTP site at Dumane and the Municipal Fish Market at Chaudi on Friday. After the inspection, the Health Office issued an official letter to the CMC Chief Officer calling for immediate action and taking corrective measures, stating both the sites pose a grave and major health hazard and cause nuisance and water pollution.
It may be recalled that the Leachete released from the GTP Dumane gets accumulated alongside the Canacona – Agonda road in a pond-like water body, and during the rains the same (hazardous-waste/leachate) flows through the Dumane rivulet into Agonda river and enters into paddy-fields along the way contaminating and vitiating the atmosphere.
While nearby residents of Dumane live under the constant garbage odour threat, motorists on the Agonda-Canacona road find it difficult to cross the area without blocking their nose.
Similarly, the Chaudi fish-market although only recently CMC using JCB had removed the large chunks of stanching wastes, which incidentally goes into the fields.
Bad odour and stench not only causes nuisance and pollutes water, the same is considered a major health hazard for the residents largely fearing break-out of vector borne diseases in the taluka.
