New Delhi: Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team across all three formats, bringing an end to one of the most significant leadership eras in Indian women’s cricket.
Harmanpreet first took charge of the national side on a regular basis in 2016 after previously serving as captain on an interim basis. During her tenure, India achieved several landmark successes, including the ODI World Cup triumph and the gold medal at the Asian Games.
The decision comes after a review of the team’s recent performances and discussions about its future direction. Long time vice captain Smriti Mandhana is now expected to play a key role in the next phase of India’s leadership.
In an emotional statement, Harmanpreet described stepping down as a difficult decision after years of memories, sacrifices and responsibility. She reflected on the challenges of captaincy and said she had often placed the team’s needs ahead of her individual ambitions.
Harmanpreet also acknowledged the criticism and difficult periods she faced during her tenure, while highlighting the victories and memorable moments that made the journey special.
She said she leaves the leadership role with a sense of peace and believes the team possesses the talent, character and confidence needed to build a strong future.
Importantly, Harmanpreet has confirmed that her international playing career will continue. Without the responsibilities of captaincy, she will now be able to concentrate more closely on her batting and contribute to the team as a senior player.
“Captaincy ends. The journey continues,” Harmanpreet wrote, making it clear that her commitment to Indian cricket remains unchanged.
Her departure from the leadership role marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Indian women’s team, with a fresh leadership structure expected to take shape ahead of the next generation of major international tournaments.
