MARGAO: The Wednesday market at Chandor is popular in South Goa.
In this connection, the Chandor Panchayat had demanded the construction of a well-equipped market complex here.
Following this, a tender of Rs 45 lakh has been issued to construct the market complex.
A proposal was earlier sent to the concerned department to beautify the market complex and panchayat house, repair the canal, install transformers at three places, repair five ponds, etc. The sarpanch said a tender has been issued for the ground to be constructed in the panchayat area and the market.
Vendors complain that all food items like vegetables, fish, chicken and beef are being sold in one place in the existing market complex at Chandor, which becomes unhygienic at times.
The new market complex will be divided into different sections, which will benefit vendors and citizens, he said adding these works will be set up by the Rural Development Authority.
He said that the work of beautification of the Panchayat house has been kept on hold, and at present, a proposal has been sent to the concerned department for roof work of the house.
Further, he says, the Water Resources Department has recently inspected five ponds in the Chandor Panchayat area, and a report is expected next week, said Sarpanch Edward.
“The old lake at Saylabhat was repaired during the Portuguese rule but has not been maintained since. The water from this pond is used for agriculture in summer and it is becoming useful for agriculture. The canal in the moon is cracked in many places and needs to be repaired. The Department of Water Resources has also been notified to repair the canal,” Edward DeSilva said.
He said that there was a demand to remove the old transformers and install new ones as there were power problems in some places.
Accordingly, approval has been given for two transformers, he said.
“Since wet and dry waste is not available in classified form from the citizens of Chander area, Chander Panchayat is not facing any problem of waste. Also, Chander Panchayat is getting support as various initiatives are being implemented to solve the problem of waste. Still, space is being sought for setting up a wet waste treatment plant in the panchayat area,” he said.
He clarified that the construction of the project is currently stalled due to protests by people in two places.
Many development works have been undertaken in the Panchayat area using the funds of the 14th News Commission and some development works are nearing completion while some works are stalled, he stated.
He added that the government needs to focus on this so that all development works can be completed as soon as possible.
Edward said that the repair of the panchayat house has been postponed for some time to prioritise the problem of the market complex.
A proposal will be sent to repair the panchayat house from the funds of the district panchayat. Repair of the roof, lack of space, lack of proper hall, repair of Panchayat house is also required.
